Welcome to the S.T.E.M Tennis After School Program

The importance of STEM learning is becoming more, and more important in today’s advancing technological and innovation dependent world. STEM is an acronym that stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Science is everywhere around us given our reliance on physics and chemistry. Engineering deals with the design of complex mechanisms, buildings, roads, and infrastructure necessary to operate modern cities. Mathematics is ever present in just about every occupation.


By getting our kids involved with STEM topics at an early age we, will provide an opportunity to explore STEM-related topics. This will allow them to develop a passion that will lead to higher education in STEM fields. Making STEM topics interesting will help youth develop and grow mentally.


Today, less than half of youth age 6 to 10 years meet the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans published by the U.S. Department of Health and Social Services. Unfortunately, youth in under-served communities have limited resources to explore programs that challenge their minds as well as promote a consistent fitness schedule. The recommendation is at least one hour of physical activity each day. Physical activity facilitates a youngster’s cognitive development and academic success, and can be achieved in a variety of ways before, during and after school.


Physical activity promotes positive mental health, builds strong bones and muscles, and reduces the likelihood of developing obesity and risk factors that can lead to chronic diseases. Physical activity also affects a child’s academic achievement. It helps to improve concentration, memory, and classroom behavior. Children who meet the guidelines for physical activity have higher test scores in both math and reading, compared to those who spend less time with physical fitness.

STEM Tennis will provide a solid foundation for education and fitness. This proposal explains how we merge tech and tennis to harness that imaginative spark, to create, using experimentation mediums as well as a soft-introductory curriculum to not only learn the sport of tennis, but empowering youth to stay active. 


Based off a study done by Omega STEM, the main issue facing todays industry is the lack of a STEM knowledgeable labor supply to fill the available job market demand. Despite students showing high potential, many lack the interest to enter STEM related fields. Some have the perception that these subjects are simply too difficult for them to understand, so they switch majors and move away from STEM fields. This deprives them of the opportunity of a higher paying job. More importantly, is the STEM knowledge gap that is created, which has long term implications. STEM careers are needed to sustain innovation, build communities, and compete globally.


As a parent myself, I understand what it means to give our youth the best chance for success in the future. I have a youngster that has been accepted to a nationally recognized STEM high school. I know first hand what hard work and a desire to succeed can have on a child’s confidence in the classroom and on the court. It is my mission, through STEM Tennis, to give youngsters an opportunity to get involved with STEM early. Together, with STEM and fitness working hand in hand, we will provide a platform for success. 


The “geek in a lab coat” stereotype of yesterday has been replaced with the understanding of a need for professionals who can solve the complex problems of today. Problems such as, childhood obesity, third world hunger, cancer, global warming, and protecting the environment can only be addressed with STEM-based solutions like STEM Tennis.
